PHIL LANG - vocals, guitar, harmonica. Born and raised in Minneapolis/St.
Paul, Phil moved to San Francisco in 2004 to attend the University
of San Francisco's MFA in Writing program. Armed only with an acoustic
guitar and a desire to tell stories, Phil composed volumes of songs
during his first months in San Francisco. In early 2005, he and
bassist Chris Hansen set out to create a band that could live up
to the potential of these melodic narratives. In addition to being
Bloomsday Rising's frontman, Phil is also a novelist who works at
a prominent Bay Area literary agency. Phil's musical influences
range from classics like Dylan, Zeppelin and CCR to contemporary
singer/songwriters such as Ryan Adams and Jack Johnson.
FERNANDO ESTRADA - lead guitar, vocals. A Guatemala native, Fernando
immigrated to the United States in 2004 to attend the University
of San Francisco's MBA program, and has recently received his H-1
work visa to remain in the U.S. Fernando's guitar licks provide
intricate and sophisticated compliments to Phil's leading vocals,
often with a subtle Latin influence. From his ripping solo in "Down
to the River" to the slowly unfolding melody of "Ramona,
pt. 2" Fernando's range creates a significant emotional impact.
His musical influences include a diverse palate of American rock
and lesser-known Latin American bands such as Bohemia Suburbana.
CHRIS HANSEN - bass, vocals. Having attended both the MFA in Writing
and MBA programs at the University of San Francisco, Chris balances
the creative element with the practical implementation of Bloomsday
Rising's business strategy. Originally from Omaha, Chris has zig-zagged
his way across the country seeking increasingly urban environments
to participate in creative projects in the literary, visual and
performing arts. Prior to arriving in San Francisco in 2004, Chris
owned and operated a multimedia gallery and performance venue in
Atlanta known as "bluemilk." His musical influences and
preferences include practically everything except Justin Timberlake.
KIERNAN RIEN - drums. Currently an undergraduate at the University
of San Francisco, California native Kiernan Rien brings an arsenal
of thunderous drum beats as well as subtle accents to raise the
emotional impact of the songs. From straight ahead rock songs like
"On Second Chances" to the quieter patterns in "White
Knuckles," Kiernan demonstrates a command of sound dynamics
to create a mood. His musical influences center around classic rock
greats such as the legendary John Bonham.
