"1/4 Mile Combo must have a direct hook-up to the part of
my brain that stores all my favorite rockabilly tunes, because the
band played them, one right after another. "Black Cadillac,"
"Big River," "Straight A's in Love," on and
on, all of them well done, and all of them devoured by an audience
gone wild; I've never seen so many people so into a band at this
club.
"I caught the Combo again on February 17 at DeMarco's Club
23 in Brisbane, along with two other bands, and they sounded even
better. In fact, better than I've ever heard them. Maybe it was
the acoustics, or maybe they were feeling competitive, but man,
they were golden. The set was stripped down to less than an hour,
but that was time enough for lots of their standards: "You're
My Baby," "Tear It Up," "Big River," "Riot
in Cell Block Number 9," and more, right after the other. "
