Always pilgrims of stoke, Seconds On End has earned a reputation
from their loyal and growing fanbase as one of the gems of the Bay
Area music scene. Since 2002 they have been captivating audiences
with their intoxicating blend of original psychedelic rock, funk,
reggae, and great songwriting. The band is currently in the process
of producing their third album, due in 2008. Seconds On End’s
2nd album, “Shadowland,” was released October 22, 2005.
Shadowland has a unique yet reminiscent sound distilled into this
gorgeous production of the 21st century. Featuring several singers,
songwriters, and a slew of amazing musicians, this album is more
deeply rewarding with each listen. Colorful, with a very wide palette
of textures, styles, sounds, and emotions it opens with the catchy
“Woman Be Free”. This fun tune with its driving hook
could easily get it placed in a ‘Roxy’ surfer-girl video.
The title track “Shadowland” features Carrie Adler,
whose vocals have been compared to Linda Thompson (Richard and Linda
Thompson) and Sandy Denny (Fairport Convention). Carrie’s
concert level oboe playing is sprinkled throughout the album bringing
a rarely heard sound for any rock band. The minor masterpiece “Treading
Water” draws lyrically on the deep emotional wells and lifelong
friendships born of personal tragedies which occurred during the
making of the album. Diving deeper in to the album one finds gems
such as the sprawling, epic "Magnetic North" and the mysterious,
subtle anti-war piece, “Shadowrung,” featuring electronica
rhythms done on acoustic guitar...This band writes great songs and
displays telepathic band chemistry in their improvisations while
taking the listener on a truly rewarding journey which is often
fun but never superficial.
